Five Sisters Art House Cafe, South Brisbane
My search for cafes continues and Five Sisters Art House Cafe was stop no.2 this year. A group of us went there for a double birthday celebration for a friend and I. I know the address says it’s located on Fish Lane, but I ended up driving in circles before I actually found the cafe. We eventually found the entrance along Melbourne St, right next to Punjabi Place. That’s a tip for you!
The atmosphere when I walked in was clean and simple, nothing too extravagant. There is an option of either an indoor or outdoor setting. The outdoor setting seemed a little bit more welcoming but because of the recent wet weather in Brisbane, we opted to sit inside. They had abstract art pieces hung on their walls for sale. My lack of understanding of the art culture made me totally oblivious to it. However, if you have an genuine interest in art, you might want to make a visit.
I ordered pancakes with bacon and melted cheese topped with maple syrup ($14.50), while my other friends ordered an egg benedict ($14) and a greek style omelette ($16.50). When the food arrived, it didn’t look outstanding. But as some say, looks can be deceiving! Indeed it was, when I put a spoonful of my dish into my mouth, it was a robust experience of flavours, both sweet and savoury. Their pancakes were thick and fluffy, just the way I like it! The bacon and cheese balanced out the sweetness from the pancake and the maple syrup. The omelette was surprisingly good as well. The spinach, haloumi cheese, tomato and bacon complemented well with the egg. It was nice and crispy on the sides without the inside being overcooked. I did not get to taste the egg benedict, but my friend looked like she really enjoyed it.
The price were very reasonable and their portions were generous too. I do not have much recollection about service and staff. The menus were already on the table, water was self-service and we had to order over the counter. It is a nice place to chill out with friends over a simple meal or coffee. We chatted for hours and enjoyed ourselves.
On a side note, I want to thank everyone single one of you for your birthday wishes through facebook, whatsapp, message, call, videos, audio message, and personal wishes. It was a different experience this year, but I am still thankful.
